General Facts

The Barossa & Light region is home to Australia’s richest and best known viticultural and winemaking area.

The region has one of the fastest growing populations in South Australia, currently approx. 32,000 people or 2% of South Australia's total population.

Barossa & Light is a relatively small regional area, accounting for about 0.22% of South Australia, making all townships and facilities within the region easily accessibly by residents.

Our region's strong growth is mainly due to the success of the wine industry, the beauty of the surrounding area, the many opportunities for employment and the high standard of living enjoyed by its residents.

Landscape

The region is dotted with nine townships, all steeped in history and charm but well preserved and vibrant, reflecting the region’s continued prosperity. The townships are separated by vineyards, paddocks and rolling hills, scattered with historic churches, wineries, and stone ruins. Patches of native vegetation remain throughout the region. Within the townships, small vineyards can be found down otherwise residential streets. All of these attributes harmonise in a way that significantly contributes to the region's charm and character.

Recreation

Facilities to cater for most recreation and sport activities are available within the Barossa & Light region, including playing fields and ovals, multi-purpose sporting areas, community halls, indoor and outdoor sports courts, golf courses, swimming pools and bowling greens. Recreation facilities are also available at most schools throughout the area.

A number of specialist facilities exist catering for horse riding, ten pin bowling, go-karts, motor sports and a range of other activities. Further sporting facilities and a cinema are available in the nearby regional centre of Gawler (15-20 min drive). There are a number of natural areas available for passive recreation pursuits including walking and cycling, picnicking and photography.

Water sports are easily accessible on the nearby River Murray.

Health Services

The region has health, aged care and retirement facilities with major hospital installations at Angaston, Kapunda, Tanunda and Mount Pleasant. There are doctors' surgeries, dental and allied health clinics (such as physiotherapists and podiatrists etc) in the region. Retirement villages and nursing homes of the highest standard are also available.

Education

The region provides a mix of public and private education across all levels, which contributes to the high level of education in the Barossa Light region.

Excellent education facilities are available throughout the region. There are kindergartens in Angaston, Lyndoch, Nuriootpa, Tanunda, Kapunda and Williamstown. The region has 13 Primary schools and 3 Secondary schools, which are experiencing growth in student enrolments as a result of the growing population.

A technical and further education (TAFE) training college at Nuriootpa offers specialised training and expertise for the region's industries. A major campus of the University of Adelaide, located at Roseworthy, specialises in agriculture, natural resource management, animal and veterinary science, horse husbandry and management, animal science and agronomy.

A high standard of education is important to any community as it enables the population to command a higher income, thus sustaining a higher standard of living for the whole community.
