The Barossa & Light Regional Development Board (BLD) in conjunction with Village Green are currently running the Sustainability 1000 Program in the Barossa & Light Region. This is a program which has been made possible form Funding from the Natural Resource Management Board (NRM)
A total of 10 small businesses have been recruited which include Motor mechanics, Car yards, Garden Centre, B&B and Small scale boutique wineries
The program, facilitated by Village Green Environmental Solutions will run over 12 months and consists of initial auditing of each participating business (one on one), followed by a series of 5 workshops and retrofit for each business to the value of $100 and lastly a follow-up assessment consultation.
Anne Moroney, BLD CEO said “The program not only provides real cost savings and reduced energy consumption for businesses but addresses environmental issues including energy conservation, water consumption, waste management, transport and chemical substances”
Through auditing, workshops and one on one consultation, the program aims to reduce the environmental impact of small businesses. It also seeks to achieve other important outcomes such as cost savings, improvements in business viability, stronger networks amongst traders and improved community engagement.
The objectives of the program are to achieve:
• a reduction in water consumption by 20%
• a reduction in volume of waste to landfill by 10%
• greenhouse gas abatement (reduction in energy use) by 8%
• direct cost savings (to traders) of at least $500 per annum and therefore increased motivation to continue with sustainable business practice
